Background:
Rylen was born as the late, and somewhat unexpected son of a Herder Master who served a small hold near the outer reaches of the Fort Range. Assuming their child-bareing years long past, the couple wass not prepared for this 'miracle child' to drop into their lives. To his mother, he was exactly that: a miracle child. After so long of not being able to have children, a new life was born. Unbeknownst to the man who was Rylen's father, and to Rylen himself, this event was not nearly as much of a miracle as it seemed. Against most of her better judgement, the infant's mother had taken to bed with a rider from Fort Weyr. Such a thing was unheard of for a hand-fasted woman of the hold, but sometimes age turns the man you marry into a stranger over the years.

At the birth of her son, though, this flirtatious affair was cut off abruptly. It had to be hidden, and forgotten, lest her husband discover the truth of the matter, and cast out both she had the babe. Luckily enough, Rylen's mother did not have to keep this secret for very long. Complications from the child-birth caused an infection to run through her body. Within a few months of bringing her son into the world, she was dead.

In some ways, Rylen's father had suspected this miracle child from the moment the pregnancy was announced. Even so, there was little he could do about it. As the pregnancy progressed, he became more and more aloof from his wife. When Rylen was born into the world, he attempte to love the boy... which lasted a few weeks before growing tiresome. He saw his wife slipping away, and as her last insult to him on her death-bed, she gave the child a name. Not the usual dirivitive of mother's name and fathers. No, it had no part of his own name in it, affirming in his mind that this boy was not his. Seeing the child as a bane and an insult to the chastity of his hand-fasting, Rylen's father sent him away to Ruatha to be raised by family there. He could not even stand the sight of the boy.

Rylen's aunt and her family were fairly high ranking members of Ruathan society. Most of the small troup of relations were involved in the breeding of Ruatha's famous runner stock. They had no argument for taking on the motherless boy, thinking that he could serve as a companion to their young son. Unfortunately, this did not develop out as they had wished. The older lad had no love or affection for this would-be brother. The two had a tenuous relationship, usually involving the older boy finding the most creative ways he could to make Rylen's life miserable, all the while making it look as if the younger was at fault.

Due to this mis-match of natures, and the growing frustration of Rylen's relatives, the boy was fostered out to a Herder Journeyman who lived and bred runners outside of Keroon. Strangely enough, this boy who was rumored to be such a terrible troublemaker and scoundrel turned out to be a fairly polite, trustworthy, and generally good mannored boy. Like any child, he got into his share of troubles and scrapes, but there was no doubt that he took the consequences honorably and never shirked the work he was given by his master.

The Journeyman, a fairly boastful Herder who had far more pride than his rank would have suggested, held Rylen back from joining the craft for a good many years. Nothing more than an over-glorified stable keeper, it took an oportune trip to the Keroon Crafthall to change the direction of his life. Having been noticed by one of the Masters of the hall, the boy was brought up from Keroon and taken into apprenticeship at the Herder Hall. Within a week, he was on a long trading train heading towards Ista. The assignment the boy was given was to train under the Weyrherder, one Master Aimee. Canines was her specialty, and Rylen had a genuine affection for the creatures. He had a genuine affection for most creatures actually, but it was a start.

He formed a fleeting friendship with a fellow Herder Apprentice named Diraija, but that seemed to fade into an afterthought when she moved back to the Keroon Hall. Since then, Rylen has taken on odd-jobs under the various Masters and Journeyman of the Herder Hall, usually taking his instruction from Master Aimee or CraftSecond Kirai, in both canine training and beasthealing. Much to many people's surprise, this training did not last very long. Rylen was chosen to come and stand for a clutch at Ista Weyr. Many days and many friendships later, his Azmaioth hatched. Now, his life continues as a bronzerider for Ista Weyr.

Note: This is an In-Character journal for my character R'yn (Rylen) on Harper's Tale Moo. Dragonriders of Pern belongs to Anne McCaffrey, R'yn belongs to me. Images used in this journal are from various animes created by Yuu Watase. Primary character and LJ-icons are of Wakamiya Kyou of Alice 19th, while main page backgrounds and one icon are edited versions of Tamahome from Fushigi Yuugi.
